HOPE and HOMES

Hope and Homes have 3 basic programmes in Rwanda. It helps families function by assisting them with micro-credit. It makes community centers where children can stay during the day and it assists the government in closing down centres for children and finding them families.

Services at Hope and Homes

  • ACTIVE Family Support model (AFS)

Families are assessed in five key areas that have an impact on children’s wellbeing: living conditions, family and social relationships, education, health and household economy. Ultimately, we aim to support families to a point where they are able to live self sufficiently. The support we provide includes food parcels, household equipment and access to healthcare. We also repair homes, pay school fees and provide uniforms and books so that children can return to education.

  • Community Hubs

Hope and Homes have six Community Hubs in Rwanda. The Teta Centre is established in Kigali and in 2008 we opened two further Hubs in Gikongoro. In 2010 we opened 3 in the region of Nyamata. The Community Hubs act as a focal point for the community, providing vital services to both children and adults alike. During the day parents and elder siblings can leave younger children under the supervision of childcare professionals so that they are able to go out to work or attend school. Whilst at the hub, children are given a nutritious meal and healthcare professionals regularly stop by to ensure any illness is treated effectively.

  • Closing the PEFA institution in Kigali
  • Community trainings on: child rights, conflict management, family planning, nutrition, HIV/AIDS, microfinance and active listening in community hubs.
  • Advocacy of family based care systems
  • Influence the development of community and alternative care for orphaned and vulnerable children

Purpose

  • To help families get an income so that their children may attend school because every child should live within a caring family environment.
